Used at National Research Council of Canada, possibly for radar research. Declared surplus by NRC Instrument Section in 1960. NRC began working with S band (microwave) radar in 1941, although it is not known if this artifact dates from that period.
Function
Enables electrical measurement of microwaves when inserted into a slotted section of coaxial transmission line.
Technical
Slotted sections are used to measure impedance and to detect standing waves in a transmission line. The probe tip, which is connected to a voltmeter or other instrument, is inserted into the slotted section, where it is energized by the electric field of the transmitted radio wave. This weak signal in the probe is rectified by an internal crystal diode before passing to the meter. S band refers to the microwave portion of the RF spectrum between 2 and 4 GHz, or wavelengths of 8-15 cm. The size and configuration of the probe and slotted section are determined by the wavelength of the signal they are designed to measure.
