Canada
Canada has known a number of successful outboard manufacturing businesses and a large market for them throughout the 20th century. Manufacturers such as Johnson Motor Company Limited and OMC gave rise to large factories to fill the appetite of consumers. C.E. Scott and H.B. Atwater established a small tool making and punch press business in 1932. In 1935, they were approached by a man named DuMonte who requested them to manufacture a small outboard motor for him to sell. The motor was showcased at a New York exhibition, and reportedly received several hundred orders. In 1946, SCOTT-ATWATER outboards were introduced to the market, initially offering a 3.6 horsepower model, followed by a 7 1/2 horsepower model in 1947. By 1949, their product line had expanded to include models with 3.6, 4, 5, and 7 1/2 horsepower. In January 1999, McCulloch Motors Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and sold its European division to Husqvarna AB.
Function
This artifact functions as a small internal combustion 2-cylinder 7.5 Horsepower engine. This artifact can be attached to the stern of a small boat.
Technical
This 7.5 horsepower Scott-Atwater outboard, manufactured in 1948, was a freshwater model; the engine weight is recorded at 51 lbs and is a 2-cylinder model; the displacement for the pistons is 11, the bore is 2.0 inches and the stroke is 1.75 inches. In outboard engines, fuel and air are burned in a closed space, known as the cylinder; this burning process generates hot gasses that try to expand. The only way for the hot gasses to expand is by pushing the piston downward; the piston is connected to a rod, which is linked to the crankshaft. The crankshaft converts the piston’s downward motion into a rotating motion of the shaft. Two-stroke engines are known for their simplicity and affordability. They are lightweight and compact, but oil is mixed with the fuel to lubricate the internal parts and during the combustion process. Some of the fuel mixture from that process escapes with the exhaust, resulting in wasted fuel making them less fuel-efficient and also noisier as well as posing risks in the form of water pollution.
