Air-cooled outboard engines and four-stroke outboard engines were both available, but Lauson combined these two ideas to create an air-cooled four-stroke outboard engine. The Hart-Carter Company, based in Wisconsin, was responsible for manufacturing the Lauson brand outboards. Hart-Carter had a strong reputation for producing high-quality and reliable farm and utility engines since 1900. Additionally, they had a subsidiary company called Hart Emerson Ltd. located in Winnipeg. The initial Lauson outboard was a single-cylinder engine with a 2.5 horsepower rating, introduced in 1940. In 1948, they made some design improvements to the single-cylinder model, increasing its horsepower to 3, and in 1949, they introduced the new 6 horsepower “Sport King” twin-cylinder model. Although these motors were durable and dependable, they were relatively heavy considering the power they produced. In 1956, the Lauson motor division was sold to Tecumseh, and production of outboard engines was discontinued.
Function
This artifact functions as a small internal combustion 3.0 Horsepower engine. This artifact can be attached to the stern of a small boat.
Technical
This 3 horsepower Lauson outboard motor was a freshwater model; the displacement for the pistons is 6.29, the bore is 2.12 inches and the stroke is 1.88 inches; this engine has power steering and a recoil-type starter. In outboard engines, fuel and air are burned in a closed space, known as the cylinder; this burning process generates hot gasses that try to expand. The only way for the hot gasses to expand is by pushing the piston downward; the piston is connected to a rod, which is linked to the crankshaft. The crankshaft converts the piston’s downward motion into a rotating motion of the shaft. Two-stroke engines are known for their simplicity and affordability. They are lightweight and compact, but oil is mixed with the fuel to lubricate the internal parts and during the combustion process. Some of the fuel mixture from that process escapes with the exhaust, resulting in wasted fuel making them less fuel-efficient and also noisier as well as posing risks in the form of water pollution.
