Carl Kiekhaefer acquired the Cedarburg Manufacturing Company, known for producing Thor outboard motors, in January 1939. He made the decision to develop and manufacture a new line of outboard motors under the brand name “Mercury.” Instead of selling these motors through major retail chains, Kiekhaefer opted to establish his own dealer network and take control of the marketing and advertising for the “Mercury” brand. However, it is likely that there was no organized distribution of “Mercury” brand outboards in Canada until after World War II. One of the initial Mercury dealers in Canada was Quinns, a boat and motor rental business situated on Lake Simcoe in Pefferlaw. They were granted a franchise in 1949. In November 1953, Smith Sports, located on King Street West in Oshawa, announced their appointment as Mercury Outboard Distributors for Eastern Ontario. Ted Quinn relocated the Mercury sales and service operation to a small shop on Laird Drive in Toronto in 1957. Ted’s passion for boat racing aligned well with Mercury’s marketing strategy, which featured Quicksilver lower units and their high-performance “H” series racing engines. In 1957, Ontario’s distribution of Mercury outboards was consolidated with Dalex Industries of Toronto. Additionally, Mercury appointed four other regional distributors to cover British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. Carl Kiekhaefer à acquit la Compagnie Cedarburg en janvier de 1939. This artifact functions as a small internal combustion 2-cylinder 6.0 Horsepower engine. This artifact can be attached to the stern of a small boat. Technical
This 1958 6.0 H.P. Mercury outboard motor was made for the freshwater environment; the piston displacement is 7.2”, and the bore and stroke are 1.75" and 1.50" respectively. The engine has two cylinders and weighs 42 lbs. In outboard engines, fuel and air are burned in a closed space, known as the cylinder; this burning process generates hot gasses that try to expand. The only way for the hot gasses to expand is by pushing the piston downward; the piston is connected to a rod, which is linked to the crankshaft. The crankshaft converts the piston’s downward motion into a rotating motion of the shaft. Two-stroke engines are known for their simplicity and affordability. They are lightweight and compact, but oil is mixed with the fuel to lubricate the internal parts and during the combustion process. Some of the fuel mixture from that process escapes with the exhaust, resulting in wasted fuel making them less fuel-efficient and also noisier as well as posing risks in the form of water pollution.
