Johnson Motors Company started as a family-run business. The Johnson brothers crafted their first marine engine in a barn in Terre Haute, IN, in 1908. The company’s first outboard motor, a 2-hp twin-engine made of lightweight aluminum alloys, was produced on December 19, 1921. During the early 1920s, the Peterborough Canoe Company in Ontario had served as the distributor for Johnson Outboards in Eastern Canada. In 1928, Johnson expanded its presence by establishing the Canadian Johnson Motor Company Limited in Peterborough, Ontario. The manufacturing and assembly operations were initially located on the site of the present-day Canadian Canoe Museum on Monaghan Road. In 1935, Johnson and Evinrude merged to form Outboard Motors Corporation, combining their expertise and resources in the industry. Over time, the Canadian facility, later known as Outboard Marine Corporation of Canada Ltd., experienced significant growth. By 1959, it had expanded to over 400,000 square feet and provided employment to 1,600 people.
Function
The artifact can be attached to the stern of a small boat. The object is a small internal combustion engine that is designed as a propulsion system for a watercraft.
Technical
The 3.3 horsepower Johnson outboard motor from 1937, aka the 210/SEAHORSE or 210 Light Single, was made for freshwater environment, with a piston displacement of 4.7 and a bore and stroke of 2.0" and 1.50" respectively; this outboard has power steering as well. It also has another innovative feature: The use of a rope for starting the motor, setting a trend among competitors who used cumbersome knobs or straps. Predecessors to the Seahorse that were created by Johnson outboard such as the Waterbug also introduced other practical features. Improvements such as a motor that could swivel a full 360 degrees to increase maneuverability as well as the option to tilt the motor up when beaching or in shallow water served to attract many consumers.
