Monoscope generators were used by television broadcasting stations throughout Canada. This particular artefact was used by the C.B.C Ottawa station.
Function
Monoscope generators were used by television broadcasting stations to generate test patterns to allow for the testing and adjusting of television receivers. This monoscope generator was used to transmit an “Indian-head” test pattern.
Technical
During the black-and-white era of television broadcasting, television stations transmitted test patterns to allow owners and technicians to adjust television receivers for optimal reception. These patterns were designed to helps check the focus setting, the aspect ratio, linearity adjustment, frequency response, shading and contrast, and finally, interlacing. The “Indian-head” pattern was developed by RCA and produced by its monoscope 2F21 tube. It was named after the image if an Indigenous person wearing a headdress that was included in the pattern. The head was used to check the over-all contrast of the test pattern. The control had to be set so that the head appeared pleasantly shaded, being neither so dark to obscure the various shades of white and grey, or so light that the entire image has a filmy, washed-out appearance.
