This is a carbide miner's lamp patented by J.S. Sherman on Jan. 11, 1916. Sharman incorporated the Universal Light Co. 1913. Carbide lamps, also called acetylene gas lamps burn acetylene which is created by the reaction of calcium carbide with water. - Area Notes
