This was used in the Food Research lab at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. The Dominion Experimental Farm system was established in 1886 to support Canadian agriculture through research into plant breeding, crop development, and food-related research. The Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa was, and remains, the headquarters of this national system of experimental farms and is part of Agriculture and Agrifood Canada, previously known as Agriculture Canada and before that the Department of Agriculture.

With the ordinary araeometers, as hitherto constructed, a considerable quantity of the test fluid is required, and an elaborate calculation necessary for each determination. In the new araeo-picnometer these drawbacks are ingeniously avoided, so that the specific gravity of any liquid can be quickly and easily obtained with astonishing accuracy.
