THIS TYPE OF MACHINE POPULAR IN LARGE SHOE STORES IN 1930S- 1950S, TO DETERMINE CORRECT FITTING OF SHOES. THE CLIENT (OFTEN A CHILD, OBSERVED BY IT'S MOTHER) STOOD ON A SMALL RAISED PLATFORM, FEET INSIDE THE MACHINE: THE BONES OF THE FOOT COULD BE VIEWED INSIDE THE SHOE, AND THE IMAGE USED TO ENCOURAGE THE PURCHASE OF THE "NEW" SHOE, OR INDICATE THE NEED FOR REPLACING ILL-FITTING "OLD" SHOES. - Area Notes
