USED TO CUT THE CROZE GROOVE AROUND THE INSIDE OF THE BARREL STAVES NEAR EACH END, IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE THE HEADS - Technical
-
THE CROZE IS A FORM OF PLOUGH PLANE, MADE IN A VARIETY OF FORMS, HOME & FACTORY MADE. A NARROW CUTTER (CROSE-IRON) IS MOUNTED ON A STEM (POST) WHICH IS SECURED IN ANY DESIRED POSITION BY MEANS OF A WEDGE. THUS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE CROZE GROOVE & THE STAVE ENDSCAN BE VARIED. THE SIMPLEST (& PROBABLY EARLIEST) IRONS ARE SHAPED LIKE SAW TEETH & ARE HELD IN A HOUSING CALLED A BOX OR GUARD. MORE RECENTLY THE SAW-TOOTH ASSEMBLY WAS AUGMENTED BY A HOOKED ROUTER TOOTH AT ONE END (SALAMAN, P.319-320). - Area Notes
