Function

Harrows are used after plowing to prepare fields for seeding. Harrows break up clods of soil to create a smooth seed-bed. The disc harrow was first developed in the 1880s & is substantially the same today although much bigger & better engineered. Because it turns as it works, the disc is somewhat lighter of draft for the work it does (ref.2, p.36).

Technical

The rolling action of the disc harrow enables it to pulverize and loosen the soil under a variety of conditions. It is excellent for reducing plowed ground that is soddy or to prepare hard & dry soils for plowing. It may also be used to destroy weeds that have grown beyond the capability of the smoothing harrow (ref.1, p.83).
