An instrument for detecting the existence and determining the strength of small electrical currents. Measures DC current in amperes.
Technical
This instrument is a permanent magnet moveable coil type DC round panel galvanometer. It is a very popular meter for use in classrooms due to its sturdiness, portability and acceptable accuracy. Ancestors of moving coil instruments were 'siphon recorders', developed by William Thomson (1867) for use in the telegraph industry, and 'fishbone galvanometers', which were invented by Marcel Deprez (1880). Jacques d'Arsonval suggested fixing 'fishbone' in Deprez's instrument and making its coil moveable... (see complete WS in S.I. & O: drive S.I.)
