GILLILAND, AN ASSOCIATE OF THOMAS EDISON`S, APPLIED FOR A PATENT ON THE SO-CALLED "SPECTACLE" PHONOGRAPH DEVICE. THIS PERMITTED THE RCORDER TO BE IMMEDIATELY SWITCHED INTO PLACE OF THE REPRODUCER AND VICE VERSA. THIS WAS TO BECOME OF GREAT IMPORTANCE IN THE USE OF THE PHONOGRAPH AS A BUSINESS MACHINE, BECAUSE FOR THE FIRST TIME THE USER COULD QUICKLY AND EASILY CHECK BACK ON WHAT HAD JUST BEEN RECORDED, AND BECAUSE RECORDING AND TRANSCRIBING COULD BE DONE WITH ONE MACHINE. THE "SPECTACLE" INVENTION WAS USED ON LATER EDISON BUSINESS PHONOGRAPHS UNTIL WELL INTO THE 1900`S.
