This spike was intended to be the last spike in CPR's transcontinental line. It was bent and removed, and a second spike was used. That last spike's whereabouts are unconfirmed. This spike was kept by the Hon. David Smith, and returned by his great-grandson, Lord Strathcona to CP in 1985, for donation to NMST (received by museum 1991.05.10).

Function

Spike driven into mainline, to secure last section of rail in original transcontinental railway line of the CPR at Craigellachie, BC. This spike was intended to be the last spike, but it was bent by the Hon. Donald Smith, Sr., Director of C.P.R., and was removed and replaced by a second spike.
