Canada: Background owned by Augustus "Gus" L. Handford, a photographer from Renfrew, Ontario. He set up a studio in the town in 1895 and took photographs there until 1935. This background was in his studio.
Function: General: Used in the area behind the subject of a photograph, to eliminate distracting images, influence lighting, suggest desired physical setting or mood, etc. Specific: Used to provide a solid background against which subject may be photographed.
