BRUSH HOLDERS ARE PROBABLY AN ASBESTOS BASED MOLDED ASSEMBLY WITH INSULATED HARDWARE. CAST IRON SPEED CONTROL WHEEL. STEEL GEARS & SHAFTS.

IT WAS DONATED IN ITS ENTIRETY TO THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY IN 1992.

MULTI-SPEED MOTOR PERMITTED VARIATION OF SPEED (BETWEEN EST'D MINIMUM & MAXIMUM LIMITS) BY SIMPLY TURNING SMALL HANDWHEEL ON TOP OF MOTOR. THE SPEED OF THE MACHINE IS VARIED BY CHANGING THE INTENSITY OF THE FIELD MAGNETISM. EFFICIENCY REMAINED NEARLY UNIFORM REGARDLESS OF SPEED; HP REMAINED UNCHANGED; NO SPARKING AT THE COMMUTATOR RESULTED BECAUSE MAGNETIC STRENGTH WAS MAINTAINED AT THE POLE TIPS (REF.2). THIS DESIGN PROVED SIGNIFICANT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF VARIABLE SPEED ELECTRIC MOTORS USED FOR DIRECT DRIVE OF INDIVIDUAL MACHINES.
