THE FIRSTINDUCTION MOTORS WERE DEVELOPED BY THE WESTINGHOUSE COMPANY FROM 1888 TO 1892. THE SINGLE-PHASE TYPE HAS NO INHERENT STARTING TORQUE. VARIOUS WAYS WERE DEVISED TO BRING IT UP TO SPEED. THEY ARE BASED ON 'SPLITTING THE PHASE". THIS CONSISTS OF TEMPORARILY PRODUCING A SUBSTITUTE FOR A 2-PHASE CURRENT SO AS TO OBTAIN A MAKESHIFT OR BASTARD ROTATING FIELD IN STARTING BY DOCTORING THE SINGLE PHASE. WHEN THE MOTOR HAS COME TO SPEED, THE MAKESHIFT SECOND PHASE IS CUT OUT AND THE MOTOR THEN RUNS ON THE SINGLE PHASE. THERE ARE SEVERAL METHODS OF SPLITTING THE PHASE, INCLUDING USING A STARTING WINDING, OR SHADING COILS. (REF. 1) - Area Notes
