John Ashworth Crabtree started his career as an apprentice with Verity's and later was works manager for J.H. Tucker and Co. Ltd. In 1919 he started his own business, J.A. Crabtree and Co. Ltd., and quickly showed that he possessed a high degree of commercial ability in addition to a remarkable gift for designing small and intricate mechanisms. His initial resources were too small to enable him to launch a full range of wiring accessories. His approach was to specialise in tumbler switches which commanded attention because of their quality (Ref. 2) - Area Notes
