Electrical apparatus that applied high-frequency electric or magnetic fields to the body for deep tissue heating through induction. These machines could also be used for electrosurgery or electrocautery.

Technical

The Ultratherm was a short-wave diathermy machine developed in Germany by Siemens. It is similar to the Canadian machine in our collection made by STERNE EQUIPMENT CO. LTD. OF TORONTO (2002.0071) and serves as a useful technological comparison from another country. Siemens was, and continues to be, a major supplier of medical technology to Canada throughout the 20th century. The shortwave technology derives from developments in radio industry during the interwar period.

Markings

There are two metal plates on the front panel of the artefact. First plate bears the Mfr's logo : "SIEMENS". The second plate, below the Mfr's logo, bears the model name: "Ultratherm". There are three metal plates on the back panel of the artefact. First plate reads: "Made in Germany". Second plate bears the serial number: "R230 1548". The third plate, below the S/N plate, bears an instructional message/warning. It reads as follows: "Vor dem Öffnen Apparat vom/ Netz trennen./ Disconnect Main Leads before/ opening Apparatus./ Avant d'ouvrir l'appareil, interrompre/ la connexion avec le réseau."
