Pour enregistrer la visite d’un gardien de nuit à des endroits précis au cours de sa ronde d’inspection et ainsi avoir la certitude que les rondes et les contrôles sont exécutés correctement (From Artifact Worksheet, see Ref. 1). Used to record the rounds of a night watchman at specific points along their route to ensure their duties were performed correctly.
Technical
Pouvaient être opérables par magneto ou par batteries selon les besoins du client et ce, jusqu’en 1904 semble-t-il selon cette source (http://www.watchclocks.org/Types/Central_Station/4_Systems/4_systems.html A partir de cette date, le mot magneto aurait été ajouté au nom de l’appareil. Celui-ci semble être opéré à l’aide d’un magnéto mais la porte est barrée. Le mouvement d’horlogerie est probablement de Seth Thomas mais nous ne pouvons certifier car faute de clé, nous n’avons pas pu ouvrir l’appareil. Nécessitait un dynamo à chaque station à laquelle le gardien devait s’arrêter. Celui-ci transportait la manivelle pour actionner le dynamo. Une version un peu plus ancienne datant de 1889 avait un bouton électrique sur lequel le gardien devait appuyer à chaque station de sa ronde. Ancêtre des systèmes modernes basés sur le même principe de points différents à visiter au cours d’une ronde et d’un lecteur portable relié à un logiciel, actionné à chacun de ces points différents. La feuille graphique présentement sur l’appareil indique les rondes effectuées en examinant les trous poinçonnés. Ainsi, on pouvait s’assurer que la ronde du gardien avait été effectuée dans le bon ordre et complètement. Pour description complète du fonctionnement voir Bulletin No. 152A de Holtzer-Cabot publié en 1905 en attachement. La manufacture se trouvait à Brookline, Massachusetts. On the inspection plate on the proper front: "TIME DETECTOR/ INSPECTED BY/ UNDERWRITERS' LABORATORIES/ No. 17134"/ The disk is divided around the circumference in to twelve numbered sections, with increments between numbered as "10/ 20/ 30/ 40/ 50"/ There are concentric sections moving from the outside of the circle inward, numbered as "1/ 2/ 3/ 4/ 5/ 6" in four places on the disc/ Around the center of the disc: "The Holtzer-Cabot Electric Co./ Boston-Chicago-New York-Baltimore"/ Partially hidden under the brass-coloured part holding down the paper disc: "MADE IN U.S.A"/ Inside the case at the back near the proper top: "2435"/ In side the case, at the back near the proper bottom above a set of metal pegs: "B 1 2 3 4 5 6"/ Written on a metal bracket holding down the edge of the paper disc: "1/15/12"
Missing
There do not appear to be any keys with the watchclock.
Finish
Dark brown finished wood case with a silver coloured metal inspection plate and a clear glass window in the proper front. Inside is a beige paper disk with black markings and several parts that are black, grey, brass- or copper-coloured metal.
