The pendulums (.001-003) were obtained circa 1902 by the Dominion Observatory, for use with the Mendenhall Apparatus Order & used by Dr. Otto Klotz (see 1987.2133). This instrument was used to make the first gravity measurements in Canada. The pendulums (.001-006) were used with various forms of the Canadian Pendulum Apparatus until the mid-1970's. - Function

Pendulums have been used for relative gravity measurements since the early 19th century. Spring-type gravimeters largely replaced pendulums for geophysical surveys by circa 1950. Pendulums continued to be used for long range gravity ties, where the large change in gravity could not be reliably measured by spring-type gravimeters. - Area Notes

- Silver case made from mixed metals. Each side of the case has a silver coloured metal handle. The front and the back side of the case has two silver metal clasp locks. The exterior surface of the case has some scratches due to wear and tear. The back of the case has an attached black neoprene cord. The top of the case has two black foam cushions to help set the lid. Inside the case, there are four light blue fabric cushions.
