THE TRADITIONAL WINE GALLON WASSMALLER THAN THE WINCHESTER STANDARD GALLON. IN 1707 BRITAIN PASSED AN ACT WHICH DEFINED THE WINE GALLON AS 231 CUBIC INCHES AND FROM THIS TIME BOTH WERE OFFICIALLY DIFFERENT. THE IMPERIAL GALLON WAS ESTABLISHED IN AN ACT OF 1824 MAKING THE ABOVE 2 MEASURES OBSOLETE IN BRITAIN. [REF 1] - Area Notes
