SONY PCM-1 WAS 1ST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE DIGITAL RECORDING SYSTEM (AS USED WITH 1/2-INCH HOME VIDEOCASSETTE RECORDER, OR VCR). INTRODUCED IN 1977, IT COULD BE USED WITH EITHER BETA OR VHS VIDEOCASSETTE RECORDERS. BECAUSE IT WAS NOT CAPIABLE OF MULTITRACK RECORDING, AND IT'S EDITING CAPIABILITIES WERE LIMITED, IT WAS BEST SUITED TO THE RECORDING OF LIVE PERFORMANCES.
