CONCEPT ORIGINATED IN 1787 BY GERMAN SCIENTIST AND AMATEUR MUSICIAN ERNST CHLADNI. SAND OR LYCOPODIUM POWDER SPRINKLED ON PLATE WOULD FORM PATTERNS ALONG THE NODAL LINES OF VIBRATION WHEN A VIOLIN BOW WAS DRAWN ACROSS THE PLATE EDGE. THE INDIVIDUAL PATTERN WAS DETERMINED BY WHERE ALONG THE PLATE EDGE THE BOW WAS APPLIED, WHERE THE SAND OR CORK WAS DEPOSITED, AND BY THE SHAPE OF THE PLATE OR DISK. (REF. 1 & 2) - Area Notes
