FIXED AND VARIABLE RESONATORS BY RUDOLPH KOENIG (1832-1901), PROBABLY BASED ON INSTRUMENT DEVELOPED BY HERMAN VON HELMHOLTZ (1821-94). RESONATORS ENABLED SOUNDS TO BE ANALYSED INTO THEIR CONSTITUENT FREQUENCIES. SOUND IS INTRODUCED VIA THE OPENING AT ONE END ( THE SIZE OF WHICH COULD BE ADJUSTED USING THE SLIDING PANEL), PRODUCED BY A TUNING FORK OR SIMILAR INSTRUMENT. THE AIR IN THE FIXED-END CYLINDER HAS A FUNDAMENTAL NOTE OF ITS OWN, BASED ON THE CHAMBER SIZE. THIS CHAMBER SIZE, AND THEREFORE THE SOUND, MAY BE ALTERED IN THE VARIABLE RESONATOR BY MEANS OF THE SLIDING END PANEL. (REF. 2). THE LARGE CYLINDER APPLIFIED THE SOUND. - Area Notes
