Karsh of Ottawa studio operated c. 1932-1992.

Part of a large collection of photographic equipment used by Yousuf Karsh, Canada's internationally honoured portrait photographer. From 1932 to 1992, Mr. Karsh operated from his principle studio in Ottawa. He also maintained studios in NYC and London, England. In 1999 Mr. Karsh was named one of the 100 most influential people of the century. His prints and negatives, and personal papers are in the National Archives of Canada.

Technical

Used on main light, for studio photography. In Karsh's preliminary or standard arrangement, as seen from the perspective of the photographer, this light was placed to the left, slightly behind the camera, at a distance of approx. 4 to 4 1/2 feet. This arrangement was subject to change, as determined by Mr. Karsh at the time of the actual sitting. (see notes by jerry fielder, in supp. Info. File 970309). Used with 1997.0313 photographic unit; possibly also used with NYC studio light unit.
