The Canadian Dept. of Agriculture assumed responsibility for the inspection and stamping of all beef sold on contract to the Dept. of National Defence in early 1941. Specifications for the quality and weight of beef required were established, and special hand stamps for marking beef "DND" were provided. in 1951 DND adopted the National Beef Grades system guidelines for their own purchases, and use of the "DND" stamp was discontinued.
