EARLY REGENERATIVE RADIO RECEIVER MADE IN CANADA (POSSIBLY IN TORONTO, ON) BY CANADIAN GENERAL ELECTRIC IN 1924.

TO DETECT AND AMPLIFY RADIO SIGNALS.
Technical
REGENERATIVE RADIO RECEIVERS WERE DEVELOPED IN THE EARLY 1920S, AS ANALTERNATIVE TO CRYSTAL SETS. REGENERATIVE SETS EMPLOYED A VACUUM TUBE TO BOTH DEMODULATE OR DETECT THE RADIO SIGNAL, AND TO PROVIDE AMPLIFICATION. CAREFUL CONTROL OF THE LEVEL OF AMPLIFICATION WAS NECESSARY TO PREVENT OSCILLATION OF THE VACUUM TUBE BUT THE RESULT WAS THAT POWER OUTPUT WAS INSUFFICIENT TO DRIVE A LOUDSPEAKER. (REF 1)

Decal on cabinet front has been damaged, and is only partially legible: reads "[CGE logo]/ Radiola III/ Regenerative Receiver/ PATENTED 19[--] 1918 1920 1921 1922 1923 1924/ Licensed only for Amateur [text damaged]/ Entertainment us[e]/ CANADIAN GENERAL ELECTRIC [text damaged]/ T [text damaged] ONTARI[O]". "[CGE logo]/ Radiola III" marked on top panel. All controls, etc. labelled. "+90B" stamped into one connector on cable. 1 vacuum tube marked "RADIOTRON/ RVC/ UX199" on top; printed paper label on tube body reads "L.A. Sovereign Sales/ 60 Roseneath Gardens/ TORONTO"; "18" & "4/m/ Poor/ 1/18/35" handwritten on label. "LICENSED ONLY TO EXTENT/ INDICATED ON CARTON" cast in raised print on underside of base./ 2nd vacuum tube (component): "RVC" marked on tube top. "15" crudely marked by hand on glass tube envelope. "RADIOTRON/ UX199" & "PATENTED/ 1911 1912 1914 1915/ 1916 1917 1918 1919/ 1920 1921 1922 1923/ 1924" printed on tube base. "3-/M / 1/12/35" & "Very/ Poor/ M 12/20/31" crudely incised on base. "LICENSED ONLY TO EXTENT/ INDICATED ON CARTON" cast in raised print on underside of base.
