THIS EARLY DESIGN FEATURES A SPLIT UNIVERSAL JOINT WHICH WAS LOCKED IN POSITION DURING APPLICATION: WHEN THE INSTRUMENT IS LOCKED ON THE HEAD, THE JOINT-LOCKING DEVICE WAS RELEASED, PERMITTING FLEXIBILITY OF THE JOINT.
