EXAMPLE OF TAYLOR PATTERN PERCUSSION HAMMER, TYPE MOST COMMONLY USED BY PHYSICIANS TO TEST PHYSICAL REFLEXES. DESIGNED BY JOHN MADISONTAYLOR C. 1888, EARLY HAMMERS HAD AN OPEN LOOP HANDLE AND WEIGHED 60-70 GRAMS. LATER VERSIONS (C. 1920+) WERE DESIGNED WITH A SOLID HANDLE WITH A POINTED TIP FOR ELICITING CUTANEOUS REFLEXES. LATER HAMMERS WERE ALSO MADE HEAVIER, WEIGHING BETWEEN 80 AND 140 GRAMS.
