Canada: From cased set of amputation instruments originally owned, and presumably used, by Dr. George H. Bowen, of Leeds County, Ontario. He was registered as M.R.C.P. in 1877. This set was given to Dr. Bowen by his mother. [Ref. 3]

Technical: Adjustable centre guide pin was lowered when sawing was begun, then raised to prevent damage to brain matter.

Markings: "Tiemann & Co." stamped into shaft. UHN catalogue no. "X969.12.1 I" printed by hand in white ink on inside of cutting head.
Missing: None.
Finish: Bright gold tone or brass-colour plated shaft, adjustment and locking screws. Cutting head and oval plate covering access opening in shaft have been chemically "blued".
