Autre fait important, ce hors-bord a été fabriqué au Canada, par la Outboard Marine Corporation of Canada, une filiale américaine établie à Peterborough. Cette firme était issue de la Canadian Johnson Motor Company Ltd qui avait été fondée en 1928 dans ces locaux. En 1936, la firme Outboard Marine and Manufacturing Co. naquit de la fusion des compagnies américaines qui fabriquaient les hors-bord Johnson, Evinrude et Elto. Ce hors-bord est considéré comme étant un classique. Il est représentatif des moteurs marins populaires chez les Canadiens pendant plusieurs décennies, en particulier pour la pratique de la pêche, et ce, surtout depuis les années 1950 avec la hausse des revenus disponibles et du nombre d’heures accordé aux loisirs.

Technical

La ligne Sea Horse de Johnson a été introduite en 1929. Le modèle CD de 5 ½ C.V. introduit en 1954, fut dessiné pour les pêcheurs. Il devint très populaire en raison de son faible bruit d’opération et de ses innovations techniques au moteur et à la transmission : avances en carburation, design du carter du moteur et des orifices faisaient qu’il était plus puissant que ne le laisse croire le ½ HP ajouté, silencieux de l’admission du carburateur (carburetor intake silencer), silencieux de l’orifice d’échappement ?(exhaust relief silencer) et un amortisseur (spring-release shock absorber drive) faisaient qu’il était le premier hors-bord « silencieux », levier de vitesse complet- avant, neutre et marche arrière (full gearshift), commande des gaz par poignée tournante (twist grip throttle), soupapes à clapets (reed valves). Ces innovations furent par la suite adoptées et devinrent la norme dans l’industrie des hors-bord. Le modèle était amélioré annuellement jusqu’à la dernière année de production du 5.5 HP en 1964.
