Founded in 1895 to manufacture telephone and other equipment for Bell Telephone Co. of Canada, Northern Electric & Mfg. Co. Ltd. became Northern Electric Ltd. in 1914, Northern Telecom Ltd. in 1976, Nortel in 1995, Nortel Networks in 1998, and was always leading Canadian manufacture of telephone and later telecommunications equipment.
