Expedition 34/35 was Canada’s second long-duration mission on board the International Space Station (ISS) from 18 November 2012 to 13 May 2013. Chris Hadfield was the sole Canadian astronaut on board and commander of Expedition 35. This patch commemorates Hadfield’s key role with Expedition 34/35 and features a unique logo that represents Hadfield, the Canadian Space Agency and the ISS.

Technical

An astronaut’s patch is designed to represent themselves and the mission they are on. Chris Hadfield’s Expedition 34/35 mission patch features the International Space Station, with the living quarters in red, outlined by a red border. The red of the border and the living quarters marks this mission as the first time a Canadian commanded a spaceship. The red and silver arcs on the patch represent Mars and the Moon. The three small stars on the right side of the patch hold a double meaning, as they represent Hadfield’s three children as well as his three voyages into space. The large white arc containing an azure pool at the bottom of the patch signifies Earth and water, as a reminder that water is the basis for life on Earth. The astronaut wings at the top of the patch were conferred to Hadfield in 1995 by the Prime Minister of Canada to recognize him as Canada’s first military pilot astronaut. The entire patch is shaped like a guitar pick, which symbolizes Hadfield’s love of music and the mission’s emphasis on science and art.
