The Big Bellanca, as the painting offerd to the corporation is called, was made by famous Canadian aviation artist and director emeritus of CSTMC Robert William Bradford in the late 1980s. The important contribution of the Bellanca Aircruiser in the history of bush flying in Canada, led to the inclusion in the Bush Pilot Series of limited edition prints and artist proof based on paintings created by Mr. Bradford. If truth be told, The Big Bellanca, as the limited edition print produced by Aviation Art of Canada in Yellowknife NWT, was called, for some time the most popular limited edition print sold by this company, if not the most popular in Canada. The Big Bellanca is a 1937-38 winter scene that shows a Bellanca Aircruiser bushplane used to transport bags of uranium ore concentrates out of a mine at Cameron Bay / Port Radium, on the shores of Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories. Working in cooperation with Eldorado Gold Mines, the operator of the Aircruiser, Mackenzie Air Service of Edmonton, pioneered the transport of uranium concentrates by air. Once delivered to a refinery located at Port Hope, Ontario, this material was processed to extract the radium it contained. Arguably the most valuable substance on earth, radium was used to fight cancer. Although built only in small numbers, the “Big Bellanca” or “Flying W”, as the Aircruiser was called, was the most efficient airplane of its day. Bellanca Aircraft Corporation and its founder, Giuseppe Mario Bellanca, were well known for the quality of their designs. The nickname "Big Bellanca" given to the aircruiser can be explained by the fact that it was the largest type of Bellanca airplane flown in Canada.
Function
This painting is a representation of an American-made bushplane, the Bellanca Aircruiser registered as CF-AWR, used to transport bags of uranium ore concentrates out of the Northwest Territories during the winter of 1937-1938.
Technical
The Bellanca Aircruiser was designed in the early 1930s by Bellanca Aircraft Corporation, an American company headed by Giuseppe Mario “Joe / G.M.” Bellanca (1886-1960) that was well known and respected for efficiency of its designs. In that regard, the Aircruiser represents a pinnacle in the history of the period. It was undoubtedly the most efficient single-engined airplane of its day. Less than 25 examples of Bellanca’s large transport planes were built, between 1928 and 1938, but many of them had rather interesting careers, in the United States, the Philippines, Mexico, Cuba and – especially – Canada.
