This section of a blade was installed in one of the 2 turbines built by Peter South and Raj Rangi at NRC and installed on the roof of the National Aeronautics Establishment. It attracted attention of the NRC’s director, who approved South’s and Rangi’s research on wind energy and started “the golden age” of wind energy research at NRC.
Function
This blade was used on a test turbine to study how wind energy could be converted into electrical energy.
Technical
South and Rangi built two 3.6 m diameter turbines and installed them on the roof of the National Aeronautics Establishment building. These had simple self-starting devices based on a Savonius rotor, and simple speed-limiting devices. The blades were made in two halves, each with three straight sections rather than having a continuous curve. This was for easier manufacture and transportation. This section features spring-loaded spoilers mounted at a point mid-length on each blade. These were to act as breaks to limit the maximum speed of the rotor and prevent structural failure in high winds. They would be automatically deployed by centrifugal force when the blades reached maximum speed. For details see HA on Wind energy by S. Board.

Markings
On the sticker on the top of the blade/Sur l'autocollant sur le dessus de la pale éolienne:"2) Six inch Chord/ "Kinked Element"".
Missing
None apparent/L'objet a toutes ces pièces.
Finish
A red painted rectangular flat metal object. Both open ends of the object are filled with a synthetic sealer. The top side of the blade has a metal cable that is fastened to the turbine with five screws that are staggered along the cable. The screws are held in place with metal clamps and a small black synthetic square that is visible beneath each screw. The proper right side of the artifact has a single steel sheet that is held on hinges with a metal bar. The proper right side of the blade also has a folded metal piece along its end. A white sticker with handwriting is visible on the proper left side of the artifact.
