Period
Used between the 1960s and the 2000s.
Canada
This artifact was used at the Imperial Oil geophysics laboratory.
Function
This theodolite was used for high-precision angular measurements in first order triangulation and geographical determination.
Technical
This kind of theodolite was used during various survey and engineering tasks where first or second order accuracies were not essential, like property and mine surveys. It has foot screws and a plate level used during the initial level, and an automatic vertical index which makes readings easier. As it has no mechanical parts, this theodolite requires no maintenance. Each circle is read with the aid of an optical micrometer whose drum is graduated to 20 inches, with estimations made easily to 5 inches. With its two independent cylindrical vertical axes and two horizontal clamps, this theodolite allows for the repetition method to be used for observing. The tribrach can be removed from the theodolite without disturbing the centering and can be used with other Wild traversing equipment and accessories.
