The Contempra model telephone was the first phone by Northern Electric to be designed and built in Canada. This Contempra holds special national significance as it was used by Canadian biologist Joe MacInnis to call Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau from the Sub-Igloo during the Arctic III expedition in December 1972. The call was made at 40 below Resolute Bay and under 3 ft of ice. A recording of this call, made on the same day was preserved on tape. Electronics technician Chester Beachell set up the phone in the Sub-Igloo. This phone is, with reasonable certainty, the one used in Sub-Igloo on the next Arctic expedition, Arctic IV in 1974. During this expedition, the team of scientists worked with CBC to broadcast a program called Inukshuk. The phone is match in colour and style to the phone shown in photographs and artistic renderings of the call made at the time and circulated in publications such as National Geographic.
Function
This is a device used to transmit and receive telephone signals for voice communication. It converts human speech into variations of electric current for purpose of transmission by line, fibre, or radio to a remote or local point where signals are reconverted into sound waves.
Technical
This model is a rotary Contempra telephone. Due to the rotary dial’s position on the underside of the handset, the dial is smaller than dials generally were at the time. The model QSK100-AX came with a 3-conductor mounting cord. There were also colour codes associated with the Contempra models, for bright red the code was 23. On the recordings of the call to the Prime Minister we can hear the expedition team discuss how hundreds of people across Canada were working, holding patches to make sure the call went through.
