Other titles: The new diesel-engine fast express cargo ship the "Canadian Challenger" of the Canadian National Steamships, lying at her pier in Halifax just preparatory to her sailing on her maiden voyage to the British West Indies and Demerara (British Guiana). She loaded a cargo of Canadian products and will return to Canada with fruits and other produce of the West Indies. The "Canadian Challenger" is one of three similar ships of the new Canadian National diesel fleet, "Canadian Cruiser" has just returned to Canada on her maiden voyage from the British West Indies and Demerara. All three vessels are powered with the largest diesel engines yet made in Canada, 6000 b.h.p. which were built by Canadian Vickers in Montreal. These ships are 436 ft. 6 in. In overall length, have a beam of 59 ft., loaded draft 25 ft., deadweight tonnage 7,500 and have a speed of 15 knots. Cargo handling equipment is electrically operated, as are other facilities, and there is a general cargo space of 370,000 cu. ft. with 16,000 cu. ft. of refrigerator space for carrying refrigerated cargo southbound and fruits northbound. While primarily for express cargo each ship has accommodation for twelve passengers in five 2-berth and two single rooms.
