- Captain F.C. Smith on the bridge of the "Canadian Challenger". Captain Smith is a native of La Have, N.S., and joined the service of the Canadian National Steamships as third officer of the "Canadian Carrier" in 1924. In 1930, he obtained his Master's foreign-going certificate and four years later undertook naval training for a period of nine months. On his return, he was appointed Chief Officer of the "Lady Hawkins" where he remained until October, 1939, when he went on active service with the R.C.N.R., serving in that service until May 1944, when he was placed on the naval retired list. Returning to the Canadian National Steamships in 1944, he was appointed Chief Officer and promoted Master in September of the same year. He has served as Master on several of the company's ships prior to his appointment to the bridge of the "Canadian Challenger".
