- P.E. Island - drying Irish Moss. This Irish Moss is gathered on Prince Edward Island by local residents and fishermen, mainly at Tignish, Miminegash, Egmont Bay, Souris and Rustice. Tignish is the principal centre. The moss, after being washed, dried and bleached is baled and sent to Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Chicago. Boston is the largest processing centre. The moss has many uses, among them being in medicinal preparations, the tanning of leather, in the manufacture of ice cream and paints, cotton products and cosmetics and in the colouring of ales In the medicinal field, I understand iodine is extracted from the moss. Moss is a kind of sea weed and is gathered up along the shore after storms, which wash it up on the beach. The Canadian Government has appointed a Canadian Commissioner, who has an office in Rockefeller Centre, New York, for the purpose of furthering the purchase of Irish Moss from Canada by American plants.
