- Railroads run on wheels and watches. The round face of the railwayman's watch with its 24 hours is as important to train operation as the wheels of the cars. Everything is timed. Before starting a run, Engineer Ed Hone must check his watch against his conductors. Here Conductor W.J. Shirley compares his watch with Engineer Hone's in the cab of a diesel electric engine, prior to pulling out of Bonaventure freight terminal on fast freight 495 to Toronto. Conductors operate out of a caboose on the rear of the train. Contact is maintained by hand signals or lanterns, whistle signals and in an emergency the air brake system can be used. Train orders picked up on leaving Turcot Yards in Montreal establish the run before departure and the modern block signal system en route controls the movement of the train along the way.
