A thermometer made in England for the Canadian meteorological service, representative of the type of thermometer used by ordinary observers. This was was used by volunteer observer Mr. Clare Watson atBeeton from 1968 (or earlier) until 1971, & then possibly at Roberts Lake untilhis death in 1977.

Function

An instrument used to measure the highest or maximum air temperature by means of a column of mercury, the top of which remains fixed at the highest point that the column reaches.

Technical

A single tube or sheathless maximum thermometer with a cylindrical bulb, of the kind used by the Canadianmeteorological service after 1951, when sheathless thermometers replaced sheathed ones. The development of weather resistant colouring for the scale eliminated the need for a second tube to protect the scale.
