Period: Karsh of Ottawa studio operated 1932- 1992.
Canada: Part of a large collection of photographic equipment used by Yousuf Karsh, Canada's internationally honoured portrait photographer. From 1932 to 1992, Mr. Karsh operated from his principle studio in Ottawa, photographing heads of state, religious leaders, and those prominent in business, the arts and entertainment. Karsh papers are in NAC.
Function: General: Used in the area behind the subject of a photograph, to eliminate distracting images, influence lighting, suggest desired physical setting or mood, etc. Specific: Used to provide a solid background against which subject may be photographed.
Technical: These background units were used by Karsh as neutral fields in his standard set-up. The backgrounds (.3-.4) themselves were probably designed and constructed by Karsh/his assistants. The largest was placed directly behind the subject, the smaller off to one side. A small light was placed between the two, or directly behind the subject, to illuminate the background, and separate it from subject

Finish: Smaller background has dark brown woven fabric surface on one side; woven texture shiny white synthetic on reverse. Mounted on wooden dowel, one-half (length-wise) of which is painted dark brown; silver metal wire provides means of suspension.
