Function

To produce high frequency currents for therapeutic administration to individuals; when connected to X-ray tubes, this unit used for both diagnostic & therapeutic radiology.

Technical

Early portable unit, promoted for use in diagnostic & therapeutic X-ray treatments, and for delivery of high frequency current. Victor Electric Co. was founded in 1893, and was a major supplier of X-ray and electrotherapeutic devices. It was absorbed by General Electric in 1926, and formed the basis for GE Medical Systems division. (Ref. 5)

Silver metal plate fixed to inside back edge of case lid marked "TRADE/ VICTOR [logo]/ MARK/ ELECTRIC CO., CHICAGO/ 2244". "VICTOR/ = CHICAGO [& logo]" marked on controls cover plate."FREQUENCY CHANGER", "CURRENT REGULATOR", "ULTRA VIOLET" and "D'ARSONVAL" printed on imitation ivory plates fixed to top plate.

Missing

All glass electrodes (3 ?), sponge electrode, vacuum tube holder, main current socket attachment plugs (2), attachment cord & plug, and vacuum regulator wires missing when acquired by UHN in 1989. Two X-ray tubes missing since acquired by CSTM in 2002. Leather carrying handle for case is loose, but present; marked PT.

Finish

Unit housed in dark wood case; silver metal posts, hinges & closures, and misc. fittings; black bakelite top plate, knobs and misc. fittings; brass (?) contact posts and misc. fittings; felt lining on internal case supports; red glass; imitation ivory plates.
