Canada: Cased set of amputation instruments originally owned, and presumably used, by Dr. George H. Bowen, of Leeds County, Ontario. He was registered as M.R.C.P. in 1877. This set was given to Dr. Bowen by his mother. [Ref. 3]
Function: To contain and protect contents when not in use, and to increase useable storage space within case. This cover is for small internal compartment used to house needles, suture material, pins, etc..
Technical: Appears virtually identical to Tiemann's 1889 "American Armamentarium Chirurgicum" trade catalogue listing "Amputating and Trepanning Set" of boxed instruments, priced at $44.25 [Ref. 4]
