During cupping treatment, cups were first immersed in hot water, then the alcohol lamp was lit & inserted into the cups for 20 seconds. The cup was then applied to the skin. Great dexterity was required to lift cup, apply scarificator and recup before the tumefaction had subsided. [Ref. 4] - Area Notes

- Markings
- Brass plate on case lid engraved "TO/ Dr. G.R. Grasett/ from his Friend/ Robert Symes/ Quebec 1838". Paper label fixed to underside of lid reads "FULLER/ Manufacturer of/ Surgical Instruments/ & every description of/ TRUSSES & BANDAGES/ 239, WHITECHAPEL RD. LONDON." UHN catalogue no. "X921.2.1 A" printed by hand in white ink in upper right of case back, below hinge. Paper label fixed to underside of base bears handwritten text "Case of Cupping Instruments./Presented to the Academy of Medicine Toronto by/ Dr. F. Le M. Grasett, nephew of the D.G.R. Grasett to whom they belonged. He was born in Portugal at Coimbra/ in 1811. Son of Henry Grasett, surgeon 48th Northampton Regt./ serving under Sir Arthur Wellesley (Duke of Wellington). His/ friend Robert Symes shortly after his beginning practice gave/ him this case. It is a good type of the much used instrument of/ that day. D.G.R. Gasett died 1847 in Toronto of typhus fever./ Presented March 1st 1921. Lancet, lamp, cups (2)."
