Taken from curatorial worksheet: "Used to view 3D picture of molecules (based on crystallographic results) and also of unit cells, before the ORTEP program became popular. 1960s punch-card computers were used to calculate the angles for the models. The researchers or students fed the cell parameters and the positions of all the atoms in the molecule. There were plastic balls of different colours or wood balls which the researchers or students painted themselves." - Function
