This artifact was used to determine the liquid limit of soil, that is the critical content of water in a fine-grained soil, or the point at which soaked soil will flow. The soil sample is placed in the cup, which is then raised and dropped at a specific distance from the hard surface of the device, mixing a solvent with the soil sample.
