This medal was awared to Marc Garneau upon the completion of his second Shuttle mission, STS-77. It was the first mission he flew as a Mission Specialist having completed additional training in 1992, rather than a Payload Specialist. The former has responsibilities that include systems and subsystems of the spacecraft where the latter is only responsible for a particular experiment or equipment test. Garneau was only the second Canadian astronaut to fly as a Mission Specialist, Chris Hadfield being the first only a year before. One of the most interesting things to note about this medal is that Garneau was not allowed to wear it as he was not American. (Ref 1) This illustrates that while Canadians were partners in the American space flight program, they were still outsiders in some respects.
